Marble and bronze sculptures created from 1857 to 1870 while living in Rome with her wife, Shakespearean actress Charlotte Cushman. Inventive interpretations of literary and biblical subjects and allegories of American industry, including the 1863 Bethesda Fountain, the first public sculpture commission from the City of New York awarded to a woman. Organized by The Heckscher Museum of Art, curated by Karli Wurzelbacher.
