Josephine’s: Sharmyn Cruz Rivera and Daniel Giles

Free. RSVP required. Daniel Giles and Sharmyn Cruz Rivera discuss Josephine’s, a multi-year research project on the unbuilt Josephine Baker House (1927) by Adolf Loos for entertainer Josephine Baker, supported by a 2022 Graham Foundation research grant. Draws on archival research at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Beinecke Library at Yale and the Albertina Museum, Vienna, plus site visits to the Paris site, Baker’s Château des Milandes and Loos houses in Paris and Prague. Reading of the house as Raumplan and modernist purity, celebrity, racial fantasy and visibility. Presentation of Josephine’s: Prelude, a handmade artist book of images and writing made to accompany an exhibition at terminal in Amsterdam.
